TOS6113 OPERATING SYSTEMS

Assignment (20%)

Mark distribution:

  • Part 1: Journal Review – 10%
  • Part 2: OSes Comparison – 10%

Description:

  • Students are required to complete both assignments, individually (not group work).
  • If submissions are found to be plagiarized, penalties will be levied, up to but not limited to, getting zero mark for the assignment in question.
  • The reports should be single spaced and using Calibri font sized 11.
  • The report must have the front cover as per the appendix.
  • The report should be neatly formatted.
  • Assignment submission due on week 7 to your respective tutor.

Part 1: Journal Review (10%)

Write a review for ONE (1) journal paper, which relates to operating systems’ topic. Each student must review a different paper from others. The paper must be published within the last 5 years.

The selected journal paper must be approved by your tutor.

The review should provide the following with length of two pages:

  1. Title , Year and Author of the paper
  • Summary of the paper. (Several paragraphs) [5 marks]

This should take several paragraphs and should be in your own words instead of copying the paper’s abstract. It demonstrates that you understand the paper.

  • Discussion of the paper (Several paragraphs) [5 marks]

There must be something good you feel about the paper. It can be some good ideas, interesting problems, and clear illustrations. It can also be something you learned from the paper, or inspirations for follow up work.

Discuss the weaknesses of the assumptions, formulation, technical approach, explanation, presentation, reasoning, experimental setup, results, analysis, literature review, comparison with other work, etc. Give some suggestions to improve. Be constructive.

Part 2: OSes Comparison (10%)

Title: Comparative case study of the common OS for computer/laptop with common OS for mobile/smart devices.

For examples the OSes for computer/laptop are Windows, macOS, Linux/Unix, BSD, and for mobile/smart devices are Android, iOS, Windows Mobile, ChromeOS.

The report should contain:

  • Brief introduction of the two OSes [1 mark]
  • File systems: Compare the permissions models [2 marks]
  • Process management: Compare the differences in process management algorithms [2 marks]
  • Memory management: Compare differences in memory allocation algorithms [2 marks]
  • Security: Compare the security available in operating systems and identify which is most secure [2 marks]
  • A table comparing all the discussed OSes [1 mark]
  • References

The report should be at least 10 pages long (not including references). Images / graphs / tables used must be meaningful and informative.
